I organize online, tutored cytology and haematology courses in collaboration with VetCPD. These courses are primarily designed for general practice veterinarians but are also open to veterinary students, nurses, and laboratory technicians. You can choose between the traditional, tutored format or the on-demand editions, which allow you to start anytime and complete the course at your own pace. All courses feature digital cases to enhance the experience, simulating the real-life process of sitting in front of a microscope
The online skin cytology course has also been approved for three hours of RACE continuing education credits by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.
How are these online courses structured?
The courses consist of several modules, each containing a webinar and accompanying PDF study material. The short webinars provide the essential information you need on a given topic. The study material (which you can print and keep) presents the same information in a well-organized format, with additional details and helpful images.
Practical cases offer you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned. These include digital cases designed to simulate the experience of sitting in front of a microscope. Solutions will be shared a few days later, and you’ll have the chance to submit your reports for review by your tutor.
At the end of the course, you will take a final exam (multiple-choice questions), and upon passing, you will receive a certificate of participation. Multiple attempts are allowed, so no need to worry!
All course material will remain accessible for one year after your registration date.

What makes tutored courses different from the on-demand editions?
Course material of these courses is exactly the same between tutored and the on-demand editions. However, in the tutored courses there will be a more direct interaction with the instructor (myself) that will encourage you to go through the course material by sending you regular emails during the 3 weeks of the course. This is particularly useful for those that are looking for extra motivation.
In the tutored versions, there will also be an interactive online live forum where you can engage with your tutor and ask any questions related to the course content. The tutor will respond on a daily basis.

How much time is required for each course to be completed?
The time required to complete each online course varies depending on your pace and the level of time investment you prefer. Dedicating 2–3 hours per week should generally be sufficient. Since there are no live sessions, you can schedule your study time at your convenience. We understand how busy the life of a vet can be!

Do these courses count as CPDs?
In the United Kingdom, these online courses count as 8 hours towards your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). For the other countries, we recommend you checking with the professional body or regulator of your country as rules and requirements may vary.

ESAVS
CYTOLOGY AND HAEMATOLOGY COURSES
Individual Courses and Comprehensive Study Program
The ESAVS laboratory diagnostic certificate consists of five one-week modules. Some of these (e.g. CYTOLOGY I, CYTOLOGY II, HAEMATOLOGY) are entirely held online as interactive live webinars. Others (e.g. HAEMATOLOGY AND CYTOLOGY PRACTICAL) will be an onsite course. These courses can be taken all together as part of the certificate program or individually.
CYTOLOGY 2
12 – 16 October 2026
Porto, Portugal
This second cytology course will focus on areas of cytopathology that remain clinically relevant but are typically assessed by more experienced professionals. Topics will include the cytology of internal organs, cytology of various fluids, and other anatomical districts. A few sessions will also be dedicated to cell blocks, immunocytochemistry, and other advanced diagnostic investigations related to cytology. Similarly to CYTOLOGY 1, every day the participants will be presented with cytology cases to examine with individual microscopes and to solve in order to put in practice what they learned during the course

I also organise online tutored cytology and haematology courses in collaboration with UNISVET. Some of these courses are in Italian language and are addressed to general practitioners; others are in English language and are addressed to a wider public.
L’accademia UNISVET di Patologia Clinica Veterinaria nasce dalla esigenza di soddisfare le richieste di tutti quei colleghi che desiderano acquisire le competenze di medicina di laboratorio utilizzabili sia nella pratica clinica che nei laboratori esterni ed interni alle strutture veterinarie. L’accademia ha una durata di 2 anni ed è organizzata in 6 moduli, due per ciascuna delle discipline che caratterizzano la Patologia Clinica Veterinaria: Citologia, Ematologia e Biochimica clinica/Endocrinologia. Oltre 150 ore di lezioni in presenza, on demand e di esercitazioni pratiche con oltre 20 specialisti al fine di offrirvi la piu’ completa e avanzata formazione in patologia clinica.
Il corso è rivolto in particolare ai Medici Veterinari con limitata esperienza in citologia, che desiderano apprenderne i principi fondamentali e imparare a riconoscere i principali quadri citologici, neoplastici e non neoplastici. Verranno fornite le nozioni di base relative alle tecniche di campionamento, all’allestimento e alla lettura dei preparati citologici, con particolare attenzione alle lesioni cutanee, sottocutanee e linfonodali. Le lezioni si volgeranno principalmente in presenza, nella propria area riservata verranno caricate delle lezioni propedeutiche al corso da completare entro la prima giornata di pratica. Durante le tre giornate sono previste ampie sessioni pratiche al microscopio individuale, che offriranno a tutti i partecipanti la possibilità di confrontarsi direttamente con i quadri citologici delle principali lesioni trattate.
