Online courses

VETCPD

(on demand courses)

I organise online tutored cytology and haematology courses in collaboration with the platform VetCPD. These courses are primarily addressed to general practice veterinarians but can also be attended by veterinary students, veterinary nurses and laboratory technicians. These courses are now available on demand, which means you can start them anytime and you can complete them at your own pace. All these courses also feature DIGITAL CASES to make the experience more real, the same as sitting in front of the microscope.

The online skin cytology course has also been approved for three hours of RACE continuing education credits by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.

  • How are these online courses structured?

    • The courses are composed of a series of modules, each containing a webinar and pdf study material. The short webinars (you can watch them whenever you want) give you the basics you need to know on a certain topic. The study material (that you can print and keep) contains the same information organised in an organic way, a few more details and some useful photos.
    • Cytology cases will give you the chance to put into practice what you have learnt. These will also include a few digital cases to make the experience more real, the same as if you are sitting in front of the microscope.
    • There will also be an online forum where you can ask any question related to the topics discussed in the course. The tutor is expected to reply on weekly basis.
    • At the end of the course, you will take a final exam (MCQs) and, once you have passed, you will receive a certificate of participation. Multiple attempts are allowed, so don’t worry!
    • All course material will be available for 1 year from the registration date.

  • What makes these courses unique?

    • We are the first provider in the world to integrate digital cytology cases within an online course for teaching purposes.
  • What makes these courses different from the tutored versions?

    • Course material of these courses is exactly the same as the tutored versions. However, in the on-demand editions there will be no direct interaction with the instructor (myself), except for the forum. This is the perfect solution for those that prefer approaching online courses at their own pace and do not need extra motivation.

How much time is required for each course to be completed

    • The amounts of time required to complete each online course varies and depends on your speed and how much time you want to invest. 3-4 hours per week should be considered enough. There are no live sessions, therefore you can plan your study time for when it is more convenient for you. We know how busy the life of a vet sometimes (often) is.
    • All course material will be available for 1 year from the registration date.
  • Do these courses count as CPDs?

    • In the United Kingdom, these online courses count as 8 hours towards your Continuing Professional Development. For the other countries, we recommend you checking with the professional body or regulator of your country as rules and requirements may vary.
    • The online skin cytology course has also been approved for three hours of RACE continuing education credits by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.

    • Course material of these courses is exactly the same as the on-demand editions. However, in the tutored courses there will be a more direct interaction with the instructor (myself) that will encourage you to go through the course material by sending you regular emails during the 3 weeks of the course. This is particularly useful for those that are looking for extra motivation.
    • You will also have the possibility to ask questions on the live forum and to have your cytology/haematology reports checked and corrected by the tutor.

ESAVS CYTOLOGY AND HAEMATOLOGY COURSES

Individual Courses and Comprehensive Study Program

The ESAVS haematology/cytology program consists of 4 one-week modules.

Three of these (CYTOLOGY I, CYTOLOGY II, HAEMATOLOGY) are entirely held online as interactive live webinars.

The HAEMATOLOGY AND CYTOLOGY PRACTICAL will be an onsite course.

esavs courses lab diagnostics

CYTOLOGY I

Theory + Online Practicals

In this first course, the basic principles of cytopathology will be covered, including sampling techniques, slide preparation and staining, cytology principles of inflammation and neoplasia. The course will then focus on three main areas of cytology which are commonly performed in general practice, including cytology of skin and subcutaneous lesions, cytology of lymph nodes, cytology of ears, urinalysis and cytology of cavitary effusions. Furthermore, every day the participants will be presented with digital cytology cases to solve in order to put in practice what they learned during the course. Digital cytology will give you the same experience as being in front of the microscope and is the best way to learn cytology from home.

October 2022 (3rd edition) – Registrations open

CYTOLOGY II

Theory + Online Practicals

This second cytology course will focus on the remaining areas of cytopathology that are still clinically relevant but tend to be examined by more experienced personnel. The topics covered include cytology of internal organs (e.g. thoracic organs, liver, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, gastrointestinal tract, uro-genital tract), cytology of fluids (e.g. nasal flush, TW, BAL, synovial fluids, CSF), and other districts (e.g. musculoskeletal system, eyes, histiocytic disorders). There will also be a small session on histopathology covering all the information a veterinarian should know before collecting and submitting a histopathological sample for analysis to an external laboratory. Correlation cytopathology-histopathology will also be discussed.

New edition coming in 2023

HAEMATOLOGY

Theory + Online Practicals

This online course will cover all aspects of haematology from the pre-analytical phase (sample collection, choice of instruments, quality control) to the analytical phase (blood sample analysis, blood smear preparation and examination). Large part of the course will be dedicated to the microscopic examination of all blood components (red blood cells, leukocytes, platelets) with a very practical approach, including diagnostic approach to anaemia. Day 4 will be entirely dedicated to myelo- and lymphoproliferative disorders, including advanced diagnostic techniques (flow cytometry, PARR) that are often needed to confirm and/or refine a diagnosis of leukaemia. There will also be space to discuss coagulation disorders, blood typing, and transfusion medicine, which are all topics of major clinical relevance.

CYTOLOGY & HAEMATOLOGY

PRACTICAL WEEK

Theory + Practicals

This on-site course will be a chance to meet in person and to put in practice all that was learned during the previous online courses. Basic approach to main cytology samples (skin, lymph nodes, fluids, internal organs) and to haematology cases / blood smears will be reviewed. The participants will also be able to examine with individual microscopes large numbers of cytology and haematology samples. This course will also give the participants the opportunity to ask questions and to clarify any doubts they may still have from the previous online courses.
