I organise online tutored cytology and haematology courses in collaboration with the platform VetCPD. These courses are primarily addressed to general practice veterinarians but can also be attended by veterinary students, veterinary nurses and laboratory technicians. These courses are now available on demand, which means you can start them anytime and you can complete them at your own pace. All these courses also feature DIGITAL CASES to make the experience more real, the same as sitting in front of the microscope.

The online skin cytology course has also been approved for three hours of RACE continuing education credits by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.

ON DEMAND COURSES

FAQs about on demand online courses

  • How are these online courses structured?

    • The courses are composed of a series of modules, each containing a webinar and pdf study material. The short webinars (you can watch them whenever you want) give you the basics you need to know on a certain topic. The study material (that you can print and keep) contains the same information organised in an organic way, a few more details and some useful photos.
    • Cytology cases will give you the chance to put into practice what you have learnt. These will also include a few digital cases to make the experience more real, the same as if you are sitting in front of the microscope.
    • There will also be an online forum where you can ask any question related to the topics discussed in the course. The tutor is expected to reply on weekly basis.
    • At the end of the course, you will take a final exam (MCQs) and, once you have passed, you will receive a certificate of participation. Multiple attempts are allowed, so don’t worry!
    • All course material will be available for 1 year from the registration date.

  • What makes these courses unique?

    • We are the first provider in the world to integrate digital cytology cases within an online course for teaching purposes.
  • What makes these courses different from the tutored versions?

    • Course material of these courses is exactly the same as the tutored versions. However, in the on-demand editions there will be no direct interaction with the instructor (myself), except for the forum. This is the perfect solution for those that prefer approaching online courses at their own pace and do not need extra motivation.

How much time is required for each course to be completed

    • The amounts of time required to complete each online course varies and depends on your speed and how much time you want to invest. 3-4 hours per week should be considered enough. There are no live sessions, therefore you can plan your study time for when it is more convenient for you. We know how busy the life of a vet sometimes (often) is.
    • All course material will be available for 1 year from the registration date.
  • Do these courses count as CPDs?

    • In the United Kingdom, these online courses count as 8 hours towards your Continuing Professional Development. For the other countries, we recommend you checking with the professional body or regulator of your country as rules and requirements may vary.
    • The online skin cytology course has also been approved for three hours of RACE continuing education credits by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards.

    • Course material of these courses is exactly the same as the on-demand editions. However, in the tutored courses there will be a more direct interaction with the instructor (myself) that will encourage you to go through the course material by sending you regular emails during the 3 weeks of the course. This is particularly useful for those that are looking for extra motivation.
    • You will also have the possibility to ask questions on the live forum and to have your cytology/haematology reports checked and corrected by the tutor.

ESAVS CYTOLOGY AND HAEMATOLOGY COURSES

Individual Courses and Comprehensive Study Program

The ESAVS laboratory diagnostic certificate consists of five one-week modules.  Some of these (e.g. CYTOLOGY I, CYTOLOGY II, HAEMATOLOGY) are entirely held online as interactive live webinars. Others (e.g. HAEMATOLOGY AND CYTOLOGY PRACTICAL) will be an onsite course. These courses can be taken all together as part of the certificate program or individually.

The week dedicated to “clinical pathology and infectious diseases” will provide the practitioner with a throughout understanding of the most appropriate diagnostic approach to infectious diseases, including the selection of direct tests (i.e., cytology or molecular biology), indirect tests (e.g., serology, including the use of in-house or patient-side kits) and a comprehensive overview of clinico-pathological findings, with special emphasis on clinical chemistry. The combination of the above information is expected to provide the participants with an invaluable tool to solve daily problems related to infectious diseases in pets, using an integrated laboratory approach. Whenever possible, the clinico-pathological and serological/molecular techniques will be presented through interactive case-based lectures; the participants will be asked to suggest the combination(s) of tests that are necessary to complete the diagnostic workup for cases with suspected infectious diseases. Clinical cases will also provide the opportunity for the lecturers to present slides summarizing the pathogenesis, pathophysiology, clinical and laboratory findings, as well as the recommended diagnostic workup, for each infectious disease. Last but not least, the lecturers of this course are among the most renowned worldwide, and with a very strong track record in small animal infectiology.

Cytology is an especially valuable diagnostic aid in veterinary medicine. It has the advantage of being an inexpensive technique with a lower degree of invasiveness and is able to provide a diagnosis with a very rapid turnaround time.

This online course will give you the basics you need for in house cytology from sampling techniques, to slide examination approach, and will focus in particular on the cytological presentation of the most common canine and feline pathological conditions of skin, ears, lymph nodes and selected fluids (cavitary effusions, urine). This will be achieved with a selection of online live webinars, written study material and diagnostic algorithms that the tutors have prepared for you.
The course will also include digital cytology cases that will help you gaining experience with the concepts learned throughout the course and will give you the same experience as being in front of the microscope. Every afternoon, you will have a few hours to solve these cases on your own, make a diagnosis and attempt to write a cytology report. These cases will then be discussed all together with the instructors at the end of the day.
You will also have the opportunity to interact with the tutors not only during the online classes, but also through an online forum and in dedicated online video sessions on Zoom.
At the end of the course, you will be presented with an online exam that will test your knowledge of all the topics discussed in the course and you will be asked to solve a clinical case and write a cytology report.

Online, December 2023

The Endocrinology week of the Laboratory Medicine Course is devised to provide the practitioner with a throughout understanding of small animal endocrinology. Major topics include diabetes mellitus, hyper- and hypothyroidism, hyper- and hypoadrenocorticism, pheochromocytoma and insulinoma in dogs and cats; in each disease the laboratory perspective is particularly emphasized. Endocrinology diseases may represent a diagnostic challenge to all vets. Additionally, in several cases treatment decisions are difficult and need to be made quickly to save the pet’s life. Hence, the veterinarian has a central role in every aspect of the disease, and knowing all laboratory findings can make the difference!

The Endocrinology week aims to increase the knowledge of each participant by providing new tools that help solving common and less common diseases of the glands.
Besides theoretical lectures, during each afternoon the Endocrinology week includes hands-on sessions with multidisciplinary clinical cases, focused on laboratory findings. The participant is requested to give his advice after having discussed the differential diagnoses; in addition, the participant needs to suggest the therapeutic choices. The continuous dialogue with experienced lecturers, in a friendly atmosphere, will allow the participant to learn and practice at the same time.
